Delighting in the Simple Ways

Lately...

March 13 2012

Kimchi and seaweed for every meal.

This. Almost every day.

The Folka Dots every boot-stompin'  weekend night.

A birthday. Mine! And I woke up to this...

A whole lot of these guys... I'll never get enough.

And what would "lately" be, without this tall glass of water. He's my best guy.

Shining Sun

March 12 2012

I came to this space two minutes ago to write a new post. I thought for ten seconds and said, "Forget it. It's 63 degrees outside and my bike just had a tune-up."

Don't know when, but I'll be back.

Conversion

Eight years ago, it happened. Night-skiing (or boarding in my case) for the first time. Chase and I, mid-winter of our senior year... Gliding down the mountain, in the dark, with him and the shining stars above... a lovely thing.

I have loved it since. The winter earth takes on a new feeling at night. It's strange, it's solemn almost, and it's absolutely captivating. It's as if, in the day, nature tells you only what the least appreciative person should know, but at night, she spills all her secrets. Yes, the cold air settles in as the sun goes down, but it's so refreshing and peaceful to experience the mountains in the dark that the cold is only part of the evening bliss.

Also, I love that our local resort (Brighton) offers some very inexpensive night-skiing (about $17)... Good date night, good nature night.

(I love that you can see that star-resembling planet at the top of the photo...)

Valen-dition

If routine were my thing, I would be a hot mess in this lifestyle here that I live. As a student, writer, musician and nanny no day is the same. At all.  For me, my schedule is change, and I quite like it that way. It means I might spend a whole day writing, studying, reading and nannying, but it also means I might spend an entire day in the mountains meditating in nature. Things are very flexible in my mind and that gives me a lot of peace. While our days change rhythm constantly, change doesn't mean chaos. When plans are thrown, there's no stress. Around here, we tend to go with the flow.

Then again, there are some constants that keep us moving through the hours. Every day, I know, no matter what, Chase and I will come home to each other. Ruby will be waiting. We'll settle into the night, the three of us and no matter the type of day any one of us has had--just being together is the best part.

That's a nightly tradition that will never change. We may not be routine people, but we love a good tradition. And every year for Valentine's Day, we carry on with our very own tradition of cooking a spicy hot Korean meal together at home, complete with Korean milk soda and rice-maple cakes for dessert. It may not happen right on Valentine's Day, or we may forget an important ingredient and have to forego one of the dishes, but nonetheless, it happens. Every year. You can count on it.
